Longlining

Long lining - a popular and productive method to catch fish...

Long lining is a great way of catching a variety of fish, Snapper, Gurnard, Kahawai and Trevally etc.Show More...

Traditionally long lines were set by boat. Now a number of techniques are used to set the long line - the Kontiki, electric motorised devices like the 'seahorse', and kites. Regulations state a limit of 25 hooks/traces per long line and a maximum of 2 long lines per vessel.

The best long lines use Japanese style circle hooks called Taimawa hooks. These are designed to hook the fish in the corner of the mouth without coming out.

Traces are generally pre-made and are stored on a board. These traces are clipped onto a main backbone line. Some traces are designed to slide between 2 crimps while others are fixed. Some people attach weights to the line to get the line to go to the bottom.

Long lining off the beach can be a bit of a social event and a great Kiwi excuse for socialising and having a good ole yarn with complete strangers :-). .Hide
