Salmon fishing - the South Island fever!
Salmon usually start running early in February, and the runs of salmon continue right up to the end of May.
Typically small lures such as hex wobblers and z spinners are cast and retrieved. Tall rods are used at the river entrances with mainly baitcaster reels. Abu Garcia reels have a long tradition and are very popular with Salmon fishermen.
