Suitable for both recreational and commercial vessels, it uses 406 MHz satellite connectivity to alert the worldwide Cospas-Sarsat rescue system. Advanced features include Return Link Service (RLS) for visual confirmation that a distress message has been received, a 121.5 MHz homing signal to guide rescuers on scene, and Near Field Communication (NFC) for smartphone-based diagnostics. Reliable worldwide digital mayday tells rescuers where to search
Accurately derives its position using GNSS (GPS, Galileo, Glonass). When triggered, it sends a digital mayday via a 406 MHz distress transmission, relaying a location accurate to within 100 m to the global Cospas-Sarsat satellite network. Position and vessel identification are passed to ground stations to help determine the scale of the rescue operation. A 121.5 MHz homing signal is also transmitted to guide rescuers on scene, especially if the beacon has drifted. Visual and infrared strobes assist in pinpointing the device to speed up rescue efforts.
Near Field Communication (NFC) ensures the EPIRB is functioning properly
Using ACR’s free app and NFC technology, users can access EPIRB diagnostics by placing a smartphone next to the device. The app displays battery life, number of GNSS and self-tests completed, and total activation time. Users can view details of each test, including a map showing where GNSS tests occurred, date and time, time to acquire coordinates, number of satellites used, and accuracy. NFC makes it easy to routinely check all EPIRB functions and ensure the device is ready for emergency use.
Return Link Service (RLS)
Return Link Service (RLS) lets users know their EPIRB signal has been received. The confirmation is sent via the Galileo satellite network, verifying that the digital mayday - including beacon location and ID - was delivered. A flashing blue light indicates successful reception of the RLS message. Those in distress who receive this confirmation know rescuers have been alerted and a rescue operation will follow.
