It is the sort of set-up you reach for when you are dropping baits for Snapper, Trevally, Gurnard, Kahawai and other good table fish. Perfectly suited for boat fishing.
The Reel
The PENN Jigmaster 500L-CP Star Drag Boat Reel is a well-rounded, reliable boat reel that holds plenty of line and is built tough for saltwater use. The quick take-apart frame lets you change spools - and line classes - while you are on the water, which is handy when the fish turn line and leader shy and you need to scale down. A machined and anodised aluminium spool, machine cut brass main gear and HT-100 drag washers keep it pulling.
The Rod
The Shimano Vortex Overhead Rod blends versatility with rock-solid toughness. Its Power-Carbon blank is built to take the knocks and deliver impressive strength, while the integrated glass tip shows up every subtle bite right through to the fight. At 5ft 5in, 1 piece and rated 15-24kg, it is a serious short boat stick with Zirconia guides, EVA grips and a rubber gimbal.
