How Marine Deals came about

-

The Founders

Antonio quit from being a sales rep at a marine electronics company, hoping to work part-time as a fireman and start a business on the side. He starts selling marine electronic products on TradeMe. The industry is charging phenomenal margins so it goes well.

Graham was in the middle of a sabbatical after a hard 7-year slog in IT infrastructure in the UK. He had no real interest in doing anything for a while apart from some renovations. Finding out about Antonio's project got him thinking about setting up a proper e-commerce site.

Why don't we do like weekly deals for fishing gear?

Antonio's suggestion got Graham building a website right away. A month later, the website was up. And on the 5th of October 2009 – the first email goes out to around 500 friends and acquaintances.

Sales go surprisingly well. Antonio sources the products, adds them to the website and ships out the orders. Graham tinkers and build the technology platform while trying to master the Google matrix.

-

October 2010

After a year of trading and of Antonio sleeping with boxes on his bed in between towers of boxes in his bedroom, hallway and garage, they decide it's time to move the products to a small warehouse.

-

To save costs Antonio sleeps in the warehouse mezzanine floor. Antonio and Graham don't pay themselves and everything is re-invested back into new products.

-

2012

Two years after using the tiny warehouse, it's time to move on yet again. In October 2012 the growing Marine Deals team move into the 740 sqm warehouse, showroom and offices.

-
-
-

November 2013

Marine Deals was ranked 12th place among New Zealand's fastest growing companies and 77th in Asia-Pacific's Fast 500 technology companies.

-

September 2017

Thanks to the combined efforts of more than 80 people over the course of an extremely stressful weekend - Marine Deals has finally made the Big Move out of their old 740 sqm warehouse into their new 2,900 sqm home!

-

The massive new office, showroom and warehouse is more than 3 times the size of the old warehouse - that means more space for products, better facilities, and a bigger showroom for customers.

The all new showroom is 7 times bigger than the previous one! This major change provides local fishos access to a wide range of products - with enough space for fishing, boating, hunting, diving, and camping gear. Each section of the new showroom is organised per category for a hassle-free shopping experience.

-

-
-
Antonio
Co-founder / Head of Promotions
When Antonio's not getting you the best deals you’ll ever find, Antonio will be out chasing his favourites - Hapuka and Blue Nose in the far north, or just out to get a bin full of Snapper out in the Rangi channel.

-
-
Rob
Warehouse Manager
Rob is a postgrad in Marine Biology and is always rabbiting on about all matters piscatorial (that's fish). When he's not making sure your orders are getting to you promptly, he'll be out on the Hauraki Gulf on his own 8m launch.
-
-
Alex
Product Photographer
Alex takes hundreds of product photos each day yet still manages to help out around the showroom. He uses every spare day-off to head out on the Hauraki Gulf with his sons.
