Handheld VHF Radio
Handheld VHF radios are portable handheld devices commonly used for inshore water craft and as back-up emergency devices on offshore vessels. It provides short range, portable communications between boats without depending on the ship's power or antenna systems. They are water-proof if GMDSS approved and have their own power source.
Handheld VHF radios very convenient as they can be carried anywhere. They can be easily stored in a pocket or worn on a belt. Some are Waterproof Submersible, some float, and some even have a Bluetooth Connections that pair with a mobile phone so you can use your mobile to make a call.
A typical handheld VHF radio has a maximum output of six watts. The antenna is built into the device unlike a Fixed Mounted VHF so it can be taken anywhere.
Due to the short antennas of these handhelds, they usually have a limited range of about five miles. The range can significantly increase by connecting an external antenna or using a telescoping antenna mounted to the hand-held radio. For normal handheld use, the figure is around a 3-5 mile range from a small boat.
Battery life varies with the size of the battery pack. There are models that have optional battery packs with longer operating times, or greater transmitting power, or both. Some have battery saver circuit that turns off the receiver to save power. The battery life of any handheld can be increased by switching from full transmit power to one watt of transmit power. Handhelds are not DSC capable.
Advantages of Handheld VHF Radios:

- Can be used in large boats which require the operator to be away from the primary helm position, such as sportfishers with towers or flybridges
- It is a good backup to the ship's primary radio
- It can act as your cellphone while the cellphone can be stored away safe & dry
