The Steering System
The performance of any autopilot system depends on effective rudder design. Seahorse has developed a balanced, hydrodynamic rudder based on proven yacht design principles, built to perform in challenging surf conditions.
Its aerofoil shape is designed to operate efficiently in aerated water within the surf zone, where flat plate rudders typically struggle. This ensures more consistent control in breaking and turbulent conditions.
The Seahorse GPS 46 Electric Kontiki body positions the rudder and motor further forward to improve directional stability. This forward placement increases leverage at the pivot point, allowing for a smaller rudder design. The result is reduced drag and improved distance performance.
The Large Hatch
The Seahorse GPS 46 Electric Kontiki features an enlarged hatch compared to the standard Seahorse model, allowing easier installation and removal of batteries. The wider access makes it possible to securely handle batteries during insertion and removal for improved convenience.
The access opening includes a raised lip with a bullnose ridge to help secure the hatch seal in place. A redesigned three-finger hatch spider also improves alignment, making installation quicker and more secure. This updated design improves usability while maintaining a reliable, well-sealed hatch system.
Streamlined Body
The body of the Seahorse GPS 46 Electric Kontiki is designed for efficient, stable performance in surf conditions, building on the proven standard Seahorse design. Its streamlined shape allows it to move smoothly through waves while maintaining balance and control.
The motor and rudder are positioned as far forward as possible to improve directional stability, helping the kontiki maintain a straight course. The extended handle is balanced for easy carrying, whether batteries are installed or not
A large hatch allows convenient battery installation and removal, while the internal battery position is carefully balanced to maintain stability in the water and reduce energy loss from wave impact. The hull design avoids drag-inducing fins or keels, instead using a clean, simple motor frame and a flat base to ensure stability when stationary.
Reliable, Smart Electronics
The Seahorse electronic motor control unit and autopilot system are resin-sealed and mounted securely within the polyethylene body using moulded anchor points. This design reduces internal wiring, creating a clean and simplified battery compartment with two direct battery connections.
A 10-LED indicator bar provides clear battery status and run-time information through the hull. The display shows remaining charge and selected run time, with settings for 25, 20, 15, 10, or 5 minutes. The motor is started using a magnetic switch, and the LEDs flash to indicate operation, with a slow flashing indicating low-speed mode.
The system includes built-in stall protection. If the motor becomes blocked, it will automatically attempt to restart up to three times to clear the obstruction - an important feature for shingle beach conditions. Performance data is based on GPS-recorded test runs.
Operating the GPS Autopilot Controls
- Place the Seahorse GPS 46 Electric Kontiki on the beach and point it in the desired direction. There's no need to adjust or allow for side currents, as the Seahorse GPS 46 Electric Kontiki will do that for you.
- Ensure it is clear of the winch, vehicles, and any magnetic interference.
- Connect the batteries and attach the line. The GPS control unit takes between 5 to 60 seconds to get a lock on the satellites, (Use this time to bait up the traceboard), followed by another 3 seconds to get a solid bearing lock.
- Wait for the GPS and bearing lock. Indicator lights will confirm when the course is ready.
- Swipe the magnetic control over the sensor to lock in the heading.
- If repositioned, the system will automatically recalibrate and confirm the new course.
The Electric Winch
The Seahorse Electric Winch is designed to make launching and retrieving your kontiki a simple one-person operation, even in challenging beach conditions. Its three-speed control and pulse function provide precise handling and full control during use.
Compatible with all electric kontikis, it is also suitable for kite fishing and longline kayak setups, offering a reliable retrieval solution across multiple fishing applications.
The Traceboard
The Seahorse Clip & Go Traceboard is designed for fast, safe, and efficient trace deployment. Its lightweight yet strong construction and dual-sided design make it simple to use with a wide range of bait setups.
The system allows quick attachment of traces while keeping the operator safely away from pre-baited hooks, which are automatically deployed from the far end of the board. Traces are fitted between every second or third stopper on the mainline, with stoppers spaced 2m apart. Each setup includes 120 stoppers on the mainline, which do not affect line strength and are easier to handle than traditional aluminium crimps. The system allows up to 25 traces to be deployed in under a minute.
