What is a VHF Radio?

Very High Frequency Radio (VHF) is a reliable two-way radio that provides clear communication through line-of-sight. In simple terms, VHF Radio allows you transmit radio messages over long distances.

Marine VHF radios are installed on all large ships and on seagoing small craft. They are used for a wide variety of purposes, like rescue services and communicating with harbour masters, locks, bridges and marinas. These radios operates in the VHF frequency range, between 156 to 174 MHz.

A Marine VHF set consists of a transmitter and a receiver and only operates on standard, international frequencies known as channels.

Modern day Marine VHF Radios

Modern day marine VHF radios are packaged with features that make these radios indispensable for the mariner.

A basic set has the ability to alert other ships, boats, and shore stations with a single button press.

More expensive radios offer more extensive DSC (Digital Selective Calling) capabilities and may include position polling or a variety of group calling options.

Most mid-priced marine VHF radios integrate a lot of features. Many have the ability to connect to any remote microphone and also act as an inter-ship intercom system for example.

The most sophisticated marine VHF radios are able to connect to optional voice scramblers, have an alphanumeric keypad for data entry, and a few even have the ability to use a Bluetooth headset.
